Welcome to Lincoln, Nebraska.
Lincoln is the capital city of the State of Nebraska, in the United States of America. As of the 2000 census, it has a population of 225,581 and is the second largest city in the state. It is the county seat of Lancaster County, and is one of the few large cities of Nebraska not located along the Platte River or the Missouri River. Lincoln is also known as the "Star City" (from the use of a star to mark state capitals on road maps); the city's logo consists of a star comprised of 5 Ls.
Lincoln is a wonderful community for families with many advantages for all: low crime rate, beautiful city parks, recreational programs for children as well as adults and resources for every need. Our educational programs are excellent, many new schools are being built to keep up with expanding need. 4 major colleges and universities as well as many employment opportunities allow for growth and prosperity. With its growth, Lincoln has annexed 13 neighboring towns, remnants of which remain today as distinct neighborhoods of the city, each with its own business districts, traditions and annual celebrations.
Lincoln has many historical, cultural and recreational attractions. The Capitol Building, home to the country's only one-house legislature, is one of the state's most popular attractions. The Capitol, known as the Tower of the Plains, contains a multitude of art and sculpture which reflects Nebraska's past and pays tribute to the Native Americans and early pioneers. A statue of Abraham Lincoln stands on the west entrance. The statue was created by Daniel Chester French who sculpted the seated Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.
The Folsom Children's Zoo and Botanical Gardens offers a mini-train ride, ponies, rare Spectacled Bears, and several "touchable" exhibits. One of Lincoln's newest and growing attractions is the Lincoln Children's Museum where children of all ages may experience a "hands on" approach to various exhibits representing broad areas of science. Lincoln's historic market district also includes specialty and antique shops, art galleries, restaurants, night spots, and much more.
